ASTRAL TRAVELING

1973. Il jazz spirituale ha già trovato la sua voce con John Coltrane — A Love Supreme (1965, Impulse! A-77) aveva aperto un varco che nessuno sapeva bene come attraversare. Lonnie Liston Smith lo aveva attraversato di lato, per anni, come sideman di Pharoah Sanders: su Karma (1969) e Jewels of Thought (1969) aveva costruito il proprio vocabolario — tastiere cosmiche, groove flottanti, armonie modali che guardavano all'Africa e all'India con la stessa apertura. Con Astral Traveling, il suo debutto come leader per la Flying Dutchman di Bob Thiele, Smith smette di commentare e prende la parola. Accanto a lui, Don Cherry alla tromba: insieme tracciano una mappa dello spazio interiore che nel 1973 era già visionaria e oggi suona come un documento indispensabile.

La title track apre il disco con una pazienza quasi meditativa: l'organo di Smith costruisce un plateau armonico su cui Don Cherry traccia linee slegate dall'urgenza, mentre la sezione ritmica avanza come una corrente sottomarina — presente ma non invadente. Beautiful Woman sposta il registro verso qualcosa di più terreno — un groove ipnotico che mescola soul e ritmo africano. Peaceful Ones è il centro gravitazionale del disco: piano e archi costruiscono una texture calda come seta su pelle, con una melodia così elementare da sembrare scritta da sempre. L'equilibrio tra struttura e improvvisazione è il vero talento di Smith — non rompe le forme, le dissolve lentamente, come sale nell'acqua.

La prima pressa Flying Dutchman (FD 10144, 1973) ha una qualità di taglio tipica del jazz newyorkese di quella stagione: una lieve ruvidità nei medi alti che col tempo diventa patina, non difetto. La versione più reperibile oggi è la ristampa BGP/Ace Records, che risolve i problemi di fruscio del pressing originale ma introduce una compressione nei picchi che toglie aria alle tastiere.

Astral Traveling non è il disco più rifinito di Lonnie Liston Smith — i lavori successivi, soprattutto Expansions (1975), avranno produzioni più curate. Ma è il disco più necessario: il momento in cui una voce trova se stessa senza ancora sapere che cosa dirà.

Lonnie Liston Smith had walked through it sideways, for years, as a sideman for Pharoah Sanders. With Astral Traveling, his debut as a leader on Bob Thiele's Flying Dutchman label, Smith stops commenting and takes the floor. Beside him, Don Cherry on trumpet: together they map an interior space that was already visionary in 1973 and today sounds like an indispensable document.

The title track opens the record with an almost meditative patience: Smith's organ builds a harmonic plateau over which Don Cherry traces lines free from urgency. Beautiful Woman shifts the register toward something more grounded — a hypnotic groove blending soul and African rhythm. Peaceful Ones is the record's gravitational centre: piano and strings build a texture warm as silk on skin, with a melody so elemental it sounds as though it has always existed. The balance between structure and improvisation is Smith's real gift — he does not break forms but dissolves them slowly, like salt in water.

The original Flying Dutchman pressing (FD 10144, 1973) has the cutting quality typical of New York jazz from that era: a slight roughness in the upper midrange that with time becomes patina rather than flaw. The most accessible version today is the BGP/Ace Records reissue, which resolves the original pressing's surface noise issues but introduces compression at the peaks that robs the keyboards of air.

Astral Traveling is not Lonnie Liston Smith's most polished record — later work, especially Expansions (1975), would arrive with more refined production. But it is his most necessary: the moment a voice finds itself without yet knowing quite what it will say.
